5 Women masked to look like men Their mustache masks are wearing thin The allegory’s lost again To every generation The one beside the piano scores Her life in knives, her skin in pores Mercury beads all down the floor I slip and break my station Don’t know where we’re going Don’t know where we’ve been Knowing what we’re knowing I don’t want this to end Ambassadors in pony stalls The ass before the village falls Your alms, your palms, your qualms, your calls Nobody is coming You throw a stone to make it skip It sinks the moon before it’s lit Coyote calls her midnight trip It’s time to start your drumming Don’t know where we’re going Don’t know where we’ve been Knowing what we’re knowing I don’t want this to end Your fingers stretched, your fingers 5, Remind you that you’re still alive Your scarecrow dance, your jump, your jive You know that I forgave you We hold this tent up by the pole To fight the wind and tend the cold Come here beside me, feel my soul You know that I will brave you Don’t know where we’re going Don’t know where we’ve been Knowing what we’re knowing I don’t want this to end We talk in circles through the fire Call each other’s bluffs and wires Keep the stuff we need desired Make the rest a record Sometimes you’ll wish you were somebody else Sometimes you’ll finally feel like yourself My icy peaks in summer melt I feel the weather reckonin’ Don’t know where we’re going Don’t know where we’ve been Knowing what we’re knowing I don’t want this to end

I had a little white book when I was young Told the story of a people whose time had come Wandered the earth just to say where they were coming from They were chosen long ago to be persecuted, To be ill-reputed, and to be excluded Then the sea opened up and they walked right through it to freedom Freedom from the blood on the door Freedom from the mud on the floor Freedom, and if you ask me what for you’re the only one I don’t need them, I heard myself say I don’t need them, but they’re coming my way And I see them, but I don’t know what to say When they ask if I’m one of them Well I turned on my TV just the other day Then I got in my car and heard the radio say Something about how they all control the media Then I was thinking about my old ancestors Got a couple of Chaim’s and several Sylvester's A Macintyre, Sloat, and they’re all on the boat to freedom Freedom from the knock on the door Freedom from the blood on the floor Freedom, and if you ask me what for you’re the only one I don’t need them, I heard myself say I don’t need them, but they’re coming my way And I see them, but I don’t know what to say When they ask if I’m one of them I had a little white book when I was young Told the story of a people whose time had come Who wandered the earth just to see where they were coming from Well they roamed and they roamed and they never looked back They were on their own, they were under attack When I think of myself like that, I think that I need them Need them for the blood on the door Need them for the mud on the floor Need them, and if you ask me what for It so that I can say I’m one of them

LA Jews eatin’ Chinese food in the moonlight Grandpa’s got his fiddle out to play Never played it very good, but it’s just right Reminds him of his good old glory days Then the doorbell rings and in comes great Aunt Evelyn and Diane Evelyn’s from the horse and buggie days Diane came to Hollywood to make it in the movies Two more Jews who’re living in LA LA Jews eatin’ Chinese food by the lamp light Grandma’s got the cheese horns in her hands Norman’s at the table, too, to Grandpa’s right Used to play accordion with him in his band Then the doorbell rings and in comes Shirley and Harry Used to own a deli on the Lower East Side Had to shut it down when New York started getting scary Two more Jews who’re runnin’ out West to hide LA Jews eatin’ Chinese food, and it’s late night All together round the table sing Remember how it used to be in the limelight Now they’re here and it don’t mean a thing LA Jews eatin’ Chinese food And not suffering. And not suffering

The machine is in the steeple. It is not all right. Giving power to the people. It is not all right. The bluebird fell the eagle. It is not all right. Everything is not all right. When they say he will get better. It is not all right. When they say you can write letters. It is not all right. When your chains have turned to fetters. It is not all right. Everything is not all right. It's only rock and roll. But it is not all right. Going for an evening stroll. And it is not all right. The police are on patrol. Yet it is not all right. Everything is not all right. Through the chants and all the candles. It is not all right. Taking all that I can handle. It is not all right. All the Visigoths and Vandals. Say it is not all right. Everything is not all right. Pledge allegiance to our nation. It is not all right. Take a paid vacation. It is not all right. Tell the doctors and the patients. It is not all right. Everything is not all right. Tell Jesus and Mohammed, it is not all right. Tell Moses and the Brahmins, it is not all right. Hanging on to Haley's Comet. It is not all right. Everything is not all right. For the women and the men. It is not all right. One more time again. It is not all right. This is not the end. It is not all right. Everything is not all right. Everything is not all right

No more cigarettes, no more vacancy No more sad regrets, no more wait and see, You know I give it up, give up anything for you No more other girls, no more flirty eyes No more save the world, no more alibis I give it up, give up anything for you It's you I want beside me When the rivers all run dry It's you I want to tide me Over and over again until the day I die All those bitter tears, we have cried them all All those wasted years, all that alcohol I give it up, give up anything for you It's you I want beside me When the rivers all run dry It's you I want to tide me Over and over again until I Give you everything, all I ever did My heart's on a string, and you're pulling it And I give it up, give up anything for you

about

Recorded live in February and May of 2017, ostensibly during "Klezmer Brunches" at the City Winery in NYC. While undercover as The Jewbadourians, this crack team of musicians played material from Randy Bandits albums REDBEARD and GOLDEN ARROW, along with concert favorites like "Talkin' to Randy" and "Show Me." The newest material comes from Jim Knable's occasional outings as The Jewbadour for the Unorthodox Podcast ("Little White Book" and "LA Jews"), along with a reaction to the world circa 2017 ("It Is Not All Right"). So, basically, this is Jim Knable and The Randy Bandits (or, The Remains of the Bandits, or The Jewbadourians).

Note: The voices of children in the background are real. You are not imagining them. This was a family brunch.

about

Jim Knable and The Randy Bandits New York

Jim Knable plays with and without various incarnations of The Randy Bandits, formed in 2002, but if he plays with a band, it always ends up being The Randy Bandits, despite the occasionally misleading billing. Studio albums: BLUE REUNION (2020), GOLDEN ARROW (2009), REDBEARD (2006), GREEN MAN (2007-18) form the core of Jim Knable's songwriting output, but the crust is also worth exploring. ... more
