about

I wrote this song after having been in the trenches as a parent for a couple years, still playing some gigs with the band, but definitely in the midst of life change. It's one of those "this is where I'm at right now" kinda songs but hopefully it has enough open windows in it to describe a lot of other people and where they're at.

lyrics

There's never any right age; you're either too old or too young,
Anyone with authority will tell you,
There's nothing left between us that wouldn't just demean us,
So I picked up my stuff from storage and I hit the road
Picked up my stuff from storage and I hit the old road

Said I couldn't do it, and I couldn't do it,
Said I couldn't do it, but maybe I could,
No use denying it, the truth is I keep trying it,
Just to see what I can get away with
Just to see if I can get away with it

I need some enemy I can push back against,
Or I'm tight rope walking on a barbed wire fence,
Call my money lender, feeling like an endless spender
You can tell him the great pretender's in the temple again
Give him the message that I'm gonna need him

Just the other night I went out to the gig
Sodom and Gomorrah on stage singing
Looked like vestal virgins or the second emergence
Of myself at that age when I thought I was it
Myself at that age when I thought I was the shit

I'm feeling out of sorts, or maybe just of too many sorts
I could use to exorcise some demons,
Climbed up on my machine, worked those demons out clean
Went back home again and picked up the kid
Went back home again 'cause that's where I live

There's never any right age
There's never any right age

about

Jim Knable and The Randy Bandits New York

Jim Knable plays with and without various incarnations of The Randy Bandits, formed in 2002, but if he plays with a band, it always ends up being The Randy Bandits, despite the occasionally misleading billing. Studio albums: BLUE REUNION (2020), GOLDEN ARROW (2009), REDBEARD (2006), GREEN MAN (2007-18) form the core of Jim Knable's songwriting output, but the crust is also worth exploring. ... more
